Backup Maintenance

No one wants to suffer data loss. Mag-Net’s  Backup Monitoring and Maintenance plan will give you piece of mind that your data is being backed up.  Mag-Net will assess your current backup situation and will recommend and implement the necessary changes to ensure that all mission-critical data is being backed up.

Mag-Net will enable daily monitoring of your backup through your current backup software.  The backup software will print out a daily report to notify your staff if the backup was successful or not.  This will allow you to be notified, track and react to any potential problems more effectively and efficiently.

Mag-Net will come on site once every month to perform maintenance on the backup.  The first month’s visit (Visit #1) would include a review of the backup logs and the backup calendar.  If any tapes are scheduled to be replaced, they will be replaced at this time.  We will also speak with you to see if there are any other concerns or issues with your network or computers.

The second month’s visit (Visit #2) will include the above as well as a read/write (data restoration) test on two backup tapes and a review of the log files on the server itself.  We will also take a quick look at the switches, modem, firewall and server for dust build-up or any physical problems.  The tapes chosen for the backup/restore verifications will rotate so that we can ensure we have tested all the tapes to verify that they are all backing up data.

The monthly visits will alternate from one month to another. You will be provided with a copy of the Backup Monitoring and Maintenance Checklist after the monthly visit is completed.

Mag-Net will provide you with a calendar that tokeep in your server room.  This calendar will

  • outline your backup tape rotation (which tapes are to be used on which days)
  • indicate which days tape drive cleaning is scheduled for
  • mark which days Mag-Net will be on site
  • provide an area for your staff to write any notes about the backup or other information that they would like to pass on to us.

This calendar will be reviewed by us on each monthly on-site to ensure that the backup procedure is being followed.

Backup tapes do have a limited use life-span.  As backup tapes do wear out and lose their ability to effectively store data, it is recommended that they are replaced about every 8 to 12 months, or 30 to 50 uses.  We will track when each tape has reached its life span and will automatically replace them for you.  You will also have a calendar provided to you that will show you when each tape is scheduled to be replaced.

This new Backup Monitoring and Maintenance plan will provide you and your company with the comfort and assurance that your data backup is being backed up and that the data on your tapes is current.
